As our newest car in our stable is a 2008 Honda Fit with just under 87 K miles on it (BTW, all I have ever done to it is replace the fluids, tires, and the battery, not even a light bulb). I have the "hots" for a new car. In the Commonwealth of Virginia one gets to pay "Personal Property Tax on Vehicles every year based on the Blue Book Value of the the Vehicle at the rate of 4.57%. So that is part of the reason that we buy new cars (so we know what we have, as I was in the car business for two years over the years in the 80's) and drive them until they drop. The Civic Type R has got my attention, because of it's performance versus dollar curve. In other words like the S2000 it is the "best bang for the buck" in my opinion with an MSRP of $33,900. For those of you that may not know with 307 HP it recently set a new lap record around the Nurburgring for a front wheel drive vehicle. With a top speed of 168 MPH it is impressive that it was still accelerating in sixth gear.

Well, I put in an inquiry via the North American Honda web site and requested a quote: I was under the impression that like when the S2000 was new and "HOT" that dealers may be asking $5,000 additional dealer mark up. Much to my surprise a local dealer responded that they are asking $15,000 additional dealer markup. I replied in my E-mail to tell the dealer principle to shove that somewhere.

When I went to pick up my Si license plates at the dealer they had just gotten in a blue Type R. From the pictures that I'd seen I thought it was "over the top" but in person the car is beautiful. I don't care for the rear wing, but the rest of the car is very nice. The performance numbers are really outstanding. It is quite a car. I think with this car you can say that Honda got it mojo back.

My particular dealer is asking for a $15,000 markup. While I was standing and admiring the car two young men walked in and said that the $15,000 markup that this dealer was asking was low. The Honda dealer two towns over was asking for a markup of $17,500. I don't know if they're getting the markup, but I imagine they will for the next few months.

My dealer is a big volume Honda dealer so instead of the two Type R's that each dealer is supposed to get, my dealer got three. Their plan is to offer the first one out at the $15,000 markup and put the other two away for a few months. Once the supply in the area has dried up they want to bring the other two out at an increased markup.

• Too boy racer for me
• Too much money for a "Civic"
• No interest in a 4 door
• I prefer my fun cars to be RWD
• Can't imagine the cost of a brake job on the big Brembos

That said...I'd gladly give it a go on an autocross course if someone tosses me the keys!

they look like a one piece rotor so I don't think it would be too exorbitant.
on the AMG E63 it's a two piece floating rotor at ~$1100 each.

You know... maybe a used, low mileage one. In a couple of years. Wonder if the new sporty ones will be as reliable, as the old sporty ones?

I actually think the Si is a better value and you get more than enough performance for 99% of your driving time for far less, especially after the dealer up-charge on the -R.

I don't know. There are a few big "ifs" here. If not for the dealer markup, if not for the silly wing on the back and if not for the general ricer look of the car you do get a lot of car for the money. Without the wing the look of the car isn't so bad.

In general I happen to agree with you. I'm really liking my Si and it's as much car as I need for my daily driver. Still, the Type R would be one hell of a car if not for the ifs.

rarely ever happens up here. markups are not tolerated and usually MSRP with no markups for Hondas/Mazda/ Fiat etc the worst you normally see.
