Default Buying used - how important is the car's age to you?

For me, condition and records is all that matters. When I bought my used F150 truck it was already 11 years old. That was in 2008 and its proved to be terrific investment. Its running strong and I have put 60k miles on it. But I think I'm unusual. It seems for most people vehicle age means everything.

I've had no interest for my 2006 Audi A6 on AutoTrader in nearly two months even though its mint, 55k miles, and never seen snow. I've lowered the price over $2,000 since my initial listing and today put it at $13,900. I didn't set out to have a garage queen but it just worked out that way. I'll never do that again; I wished I would have sold the car a few years back.

My 2 Jeep Wranglers were 14 YO.Both had low mileage for being 14 YO. I had them checked by a local mechanic and I had the maintenance records. No problems with either one. Did the same when I bought cars for my daughters. I disagree with the age factor. If the car is maintained and has reasonable mileage age doesn't matter. I sold both of my Jeeps and other cars I have owned myself and got more than book value.

Book value is a questionable, especially Kelly Blue Book, which I don't trust. It's clearly priced to favor dealers/buyers, not sellers.

It is becoming more important to me.
RoHS ( Reduction of Hazardous Substances) has had an effect on the reliability of electronic.
At the same time higher and higher levels of integration of the electronic devices lead to design specific or year specific electronics.
Those custom displays on dashboards now will wear out. Good luck finding the replacement.

We have only bought two used cars. The first Jeep was only a year old with 11K on it, the P car 5 years old, also with 11K on it. If I were looking for a used car and found a cream puff older car with low mileage, I might opt for that vs a newer vehicle with higher mileage. However, not all older used cars with low mileage are created equal. Cars that aren't driven still age, as do their parts don't they? When my mother passed last year, she had a 2003 Nissan Sentra with less than 40K on it. We sold it for a reasonable price to someone who needed a car. It would have made a nice first vehicle for my granddaughter, but the fact is it would have sat for another 18+ months before she was ready for it.

Dave , I'm sure your Audi is pristine. Do you think you need to target a different market? Audi's aren't cheap to repair are they? Could the buyers be fewer for that reason? Try Craig's list. You can always agree to only meet people at public places, like the parking lot of the police station.

He says he has 6 people coming over tomorrow to look at it. I told him that if it didn't sell, to let me know. It looks ultra pristine in his ad! (And, I love the color)

Judging the house and surroundings I would say it been well maintained (first impression for me is always key).
