Default Spa's lunched my engine

It seems that Lovegroova's Spa jinx has struck again. During the Bookatrack event a couple of weeks ago, my car ground to a halt on the start/finish straight. The only sign of damage was a small hole in the cam cover, where something had made a bid for freedom, but the engine wouldn't turn over. Having got the car back to the UK, my local Honda dealer have now taken the head off, and there has been a coming together of valves and pistons, so the engine is f***ed.

So the question is what to do next. The car is an 06, and has done 89,000 miles. The shell is in good condition, having been garaged since new, with virtually no rust underneath. From what I've seen I think it would be worth around £6-7,000 running. I was thinking of replacing the gearbox shortly, as this is making some unpleasant noises. I've spoken to Dewsbury Auto Salvage, and they're talking in terms of £3750 + VAT for an engine and box. My Honda dealer have quoted around £1000 to do the changeover, so it seems to be getting close to the point where it is uneconomic to repair, particularly as the car must be worth something as it is. What I don't know is what that value might be.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or have any advice to offer?

Thanks

Mike

Close call as your car is going to be worth £8-11K, £4,500 to get it fixed, a low mileage engine and box might make it worth it if it's a keeper. Or offer it to Dewsbury for a cheeky £6K for them to fix and shift. Feel for you, must be gutted.

Mike,

I'm so very sorry to hear this, I blame Gerry personally

I think you might be undervaluing your car running, but I'm sure others can opine. I'm not sure what you might get if you break it, but that is a lot of hassle and you need space and spanners to do that.

One thing I would absolutely recommend and that is not to use Dewsbury, Paul F had all sorts of problems with them with his replacement engine.

A K20 swap might be an idea - speak to Kostas.

Mike - fix it and enjoy it until you blow it up again. Mind you, my engine cost half that a decade ago...

If it's a tidy car, you'll regret letting it go. They don't make them any more and a lot out there are sheds.

I know the K20 is virtually the same engine turned 90 degrees, but wouldn't that knock the value of the car out of the window? There must be someone who can supply an F20 and box with a good warranty.

Engines even high mileage are ridiculously expensive, even a high mileage 96k people are wanting circa 4k inc box!
