Shoulder Surgery Redo
2/15
(Surgery starts out today as an arthroscopic procedure. If he can’t fix it he has to replace the joint with something new and improved. I’ve been trying to avoid this, but a year’s worth of steroid shot didn’t help. )
Ok, I am ready to report.

My right shoulder never healed properly after an accident in which it was in pieces, so a few years ago they replaced the joint with a standard prosthesis with the metal ball protruding up from the top of the humerus and the plastic receptical part attached to the scalpel and clavicle. The joint was designed to last at least 15 years... Well, it worked well for 5 or 6 years until about about year ago, when it would no longer carry weight, and it produced an increasing amount of pain. So The orthopedic surgeon did X-rays and an MRI and couldn't readily diagnose the problem. He thought it might involve the rotary cuff, so he decided to do an arthroscopic exploration and fix it if possible. After having a look, he immediately saw that the plastic pad that the ball joint was designed to pivot on was completely worn away. So he elected to replace the joint with the latest shoulder joint version, called something like the 'reverse joint'. Unfortunately they broke the humerus when removing the old ball component. This new type joint is supposed to be more reliable and also to be strong enough to allow heavy work outs - including push ups. The metal ball in this joint attaches to the shoulder bones and the pad is attached to the top of the humerus below, ergo 'reverse'. Despite some hurt and pain and screaming and yelling in recovery, I'm still married, and doing well. I finally can sleep without wearing the heavy plastic brace, and will be able to start hydrotherapy PT in 10 more days. I'm on the stationary bike everyday, and do minor movement exercises in the spa in the back yard. Prognosis is good, but it's bionic, not bone, so we'll see.

Keep us posted. Heal fast. We have heard of the reverse shoulder implant. It would be the only thing that would give Rick back full use of his right arm, which he damaged 16 years ago. BUT he's not in pain, so he's staying out of that OR!
Be well soon!

I got concerned when you did not post for quite awhile. So I texted Chris a few days ago. Hope she told you. She said you were doing better now. Wow...you were already bionic. Is there a word superbionic?? I hope it all works as designed. An ex boyfriend I'm still in touch with occasionally has been an avid tennis player for years. It's catching up to him. He already had a knee replacement and now is getting ready to have rotator cuff surgery. Has two tears. An old one he didn't know about and a more recent one. Rehab did not work.
