Default Another "Does This Sound Normal" Engine Thread

Title pretty much sums it up - '02 AP1 with about 59K on it; 13K of which is since I've owned it. Drives well, VTEC hits, and it doesn't burn an excessive amount of oil for an AP1 (.5qt per 1000 miles at most). I have a feeling the prior owner didn't take great care of it though.

Just paranoid and wondering if the engine sounds good as I don't have much to compare it to.

When was the last valve adjustment? And have you replaced the TCT since owning the car? My car sounds similar as well and that's with new plugs, and valve adjustment. Checked retainers on mine and all looked good so if you haven't done that you may want to. I'm trying to get a new TCT from Billman as we speak. For the most part it sounds ok though.

I did a valve adjustment at 50K, and checked retainers then (not that I really knew what I was looking at, but my friend who’s a professional mechanic didn’t see anything wrong). An over rev prior to my ownership does concern me, but from what I understand it wouldn’t result in noise..just catastrophic failure at some point. Since I’ve put 13k on it hopefully I’m out of the dange zone.

Havent done the TCT yet; figured when it goes bad I’ll have an awful card-in-spokes noise like I’ve heard on some posts, but I could be mistaken.

Appreciate the reply!

No problem! I would probably go ahead and do a TCT just for preventive maintenance...we all know they go at some point. May also want to look into replacing the valve retainers with the AP2, they would take alot of your worry of an over rev away.

Full - all hash marks with oil. I keep a very close eye on it. Why do you ask?

Do you have 2 S2000s? That's at least twice the sample size I have...ha. Thanks!
