Default Reinstall OEM TCT by unscrewing lock bolt?

I need to take out my OEM TCT to change some leaky oil seals. My question is, if the spring can be compressed and locked with a bolt and wing nut, can I reinstall it by unscrewing the bolt (Ballade Sports style) instead of pulling the lock pin from the maintenance hole? It wouldn't make any difference, would it?

Correct, I didn't use pin when I removed/reinstalled mine, just via the bolt

Thanks! That's what I believe.

Honda service manual shows the proper installation a few pages later. Compress the tensioner, insert the pin, etc. Honda engineers thought it made enough difference to specify this procedure -- but what would they know?

Pulling the pin ensures only spring tension is pushing against the chain guide. There's a chance you can turn the piston over the worm gear when unscrewing the bolt, which increases the tension on the chain guide(non compressing worm gear). The reason Honda uses a pin is so that you don't accidentally over extend the piston and put too much tension on the chain guide. As Clio mentioned, it can be done either way, just be careful.
