Default Considering being a snowbird this winter

We have never gone to Florida for a long stay in the winter, but we are considering it for this coming winter. We are thinking about 4 weeks and am looking for location suggestions or any other tips anyone might have for us.

Thanks

Jim

my family have vacationed in Daytona beach for over 30 years, we have grown to love that area very much. East coast, south end of beach - Daytona Beach Shores. Right on the beach, close to grocery stores, drug stores, liquor, shopping areas.. Not as warm as some other areas, but very affordable.

My Dad just got a place in Sebastian Florida which is on the east coast right by Vero beach which is a little north of palm beach. He has been spending his winters there for the last 30 years and loves it. He says it has a small town feel and is not overdeveloped.

We have gone go to Naples every year for the past 12. We love it. Fantastic beaches, restaurants and shopping. I like to play golf there.

Depending on location it can be difficult to find something to rent for just one month - better start looking now - as many rentals have a much longer minimum stay. Often the minimum rental is 3 months!

One thing that surprises me about Florida is the cost of food. I always expected food prices to be a bit lower in Florida , but they seem more expensive than what I've experienced in northern states like Michigan, and even in our country of Canada. Maybe it's just me but that is what I have found during my visits.

Not when it comes to bourbon. Son-in-law just brought me up four half-gallon's of Jim Beam that saved a bunch (like 45% less than MI)..... actually it was to be from my daughter for Father's Day (see knows me). Funny I always find Canada expensive compared to Michigan. In FL I have relatives so that helps since they know where to go.

Sales taxes can make a difference. None on food not consumed on premises in Ohio, for example. But I'm sure Bourbon is taxed everywhere. In states where groceries are taxed the percentage differences, though, don't make a big difference even in the 3% range which is only $3 per $100.

Some of my Y pals spend time in FL during the winter months. One concurs that finding a place for just one month could be a challenge. She suggested this place may have some efficiencies, accommodations for short term.

It may depend on what you want to do. Do you enjoy sailing or motor boating? If so, a place that has intercostal waterway access is perfect. If walking around town, walking to the beach, some snorkeling or diving, having an afternoon drink in an open air bar, Key West might fill the bill. Miami is famous for its youthful night life and glitz. Tampa / St Petersburg area has a lot going for it. Heading up the panhandle towards Apalachicola you will find the quintessential beach houses out on the dunes. Going further west is Pensacola. All kinds of things to do waterwise and the beaches are like sugar. If you are retired military you have Eglin and NAS Pensacola nearby.
