I Cut the (Cable TV) Cord
After seeing my last few cable bills from Comcast hitting almost $220 monthly, I decided it was time to make a drastic change. After doing some investigating, plus talking to a couple of my friends, I made the decision, and am now paying about $125 total for MORE services!
All it took was to purchase 5 Roku devices for about $125 one-time cost total (for 3 TV's in bedrooms, one in the kitchen, and one on the porch), subscribe to hulu ($55/Mo), and cancel the TV subscription from Comcast. I now pay $70/Mo for Internet only, which results in the $125 total monthly bill. Hulu provides excellent streaming content, and as I mentioned earlier, quite a few more live and on-demand channels than I had previously. I also had previously subscribed to Netflix and have an Amazon Prime account, so we now have more choices than ever (too many, in fact!)
Just wondering if anyone else has done the same? As long as you have relatively fast internet speeds, I find that the picture quality is as good as being on cable so far.

I also have to do something. My last Comcast bill stated that they were raising rates yet again and it is getting to be ridiculous, as an example one of the things is they are doubling what they charge me for having their remote. The only competition we have for them up here is dish and I've known people that have that and they haven't been overly impressed with it. I hear from a lot of people about netflix and things like that but they all seem to have some downsides.
That Hulu doesn't sound bad Gene I think I'll look into that. Can you get channels like History, Discovery and A&E?

I’ve been using Comcast since 2008. We are paying $200/mo but I am not complaining. We have the bundled service. Reception on our landline is far superior to my iPhone. I am happy 98% of the time with how great the X1Box works for searching and recording shows, plus 3 other TV sets. I’m pleased with our internet speed. We get extensive use out of Fox Sports Detroit channel as we watch every Red Wings game. As for movies we dropped HBO, etc. to cut costs since the selection was not great. We have access to streaming, when wanted. We get YouTube for free. Netflix, Hulu, etc. are all available for a fee.
As the article Ken posted points out it’s not what you get that is important, it is what you don’t get. My son switched to Direct TV and then they dropped Fox Sports Detroit, so he doesn’t get to see any Red Wings games for two years.
$2,400 a year for TV seems nuts but its easy to spend that much in one week on vacation. We are finding interesting shows on Amazon Prime since signing up a few months ago with the veteran’s discount.

I liked the channel selections, plus they carry the ACC Network, which some others don't. Since there is no contract, I can switch at any time if I find something I like better.

A plug for one of my favorite shows on Amazon Prime (and I don't watch much TV). Check out Midsomer Murders. It's been on for at least 20 seasons in the UK. Lots of great British (dry) humor, interesting characters and much beautiful countryside.
