R.I.P. Bob Shane
This is truly 'vintage'. Bob Shane, one of the founding members of the Kingston Trio, passed away on January 26. He was just a few days shy of his 86th birthday.
Bob Shane's was the strong 'center' voice of the Kingston Trio who sang lead on the majority of their songs. The influence of the Trio on music's folk era of the 60's really cannot be overstated. It all happened because of the Kingston Trio. One of the most interesting aspects of the Trio was that none of the three, Dave Guard (replaced by John Stewart a few years into their run), Nick Reynolds and Shane grabbed the spotlight as 'frontman'. In some ways, that was a shame because Bob Shane had a great voice, as was well evidenced on the ballad "Scotch and Soda".
R.I.P. Bob Shane. Charlie will ride forever on the MTA.

Thanks for posting. Certainly agree with all your comments above, as their influence on folk music was outstanding.
Terrific group that I still enjoy listening to on occasion.

One of my favorites since I was a kid. Lead singing duties were handled by Nick Reynolds, but it is still a classic.
In researching the song (to make sure Bob Shane was still with the trio when it was recorded--he was) I ran across this article about the fascinating history of the song.
