Vacation in Maine in late June
everyone,We have been thinking about about taking a road trip in June to Maine and Nova Scotia in our S.
If anyone has any suggestions or "must see" points of interest we would be interested in learning about them.
Thanks.
Matt,
Is your first trip to this area? Here are some suggestions heading north: Ogunquit ME is a neat town soon after you leave NH; ask how to find Perkins Cove, park & have lunch on the deck at BarnacleBilly's (we sat next to Geo & Barbara Bush last October
), and take the Marginal Way walk along the rocky cliffs to the Beachmere Inn near the end (our honeymoon site
). Portland is a neat city, but you may want to bypass it and continue another 20 mi to Freeport ME; visit the LL Bean complex (open 24/7!) and a bunch of other outlets that have sprung up along 'main street'. If you have time, it's fun to spend 1-2 hours @ the Goldenrod Garage , which is just outside of Freeport and includes a collection of >100
for-sale classic cars housed in 2 old barns, in which you are free to wander. [Click on the link; go to Inventory; pick your decade!] Camden ME is one of many picturesque spots along the mid-coast and worth a stop. You'll probably want to hit Acadia NP, which gets crowded after school is out, but is a very special place. The coastal area further north of Bar Harbor is much less crowded and more like 'old time' Maine; it's called "Downeast Maine". Take a 10 mi detour out to Jonesport and have eat at the diner, where everyone else will be a Lobsterman (for real)! Nearby find the parking area for Great Wass Island park and take the woods walk out to the island...accessible only at low tide! If you like Lighthouses, you can see at least 15 of them along the Maine coast.
You'll probably want to take the ferry from Bar Harbor area to Nova Scotia b/c it's a looooooooooong drive by the land route. I'll let someone else fill you in about NS b/c that's still on our 'to do' list....

^ I agree with these recommendations. My ex and I took a nice trip up there some years ago and loved it - particularly Ogunquit and Boothbay Harbor (where we ended up staying longer because it was so nice). Also took a sailing trip to an island for a clambake, which was fun, too. You might want to consider a driving route up through Western PA and NY. Much less stressful and more interesting than the awful 95 route!
I think the ferry to Nova Scotia has to be booked WELL in advance!! Although I haven't been on it. When I went to NS, it was on a cruise ship.

Matt,
Here is a site that is used by motorcycle groups to find great roads to travel, and the "S" is perfect for this. If you haven't maped out a trip yet or are looking for some side trips this may help. I've used it to find some great roads here in Eastern Ohio and Western Pa.

Maine is one of our favorite destinations.
We enjoy Ogunquit and Perkins Cove that was mentioned.
If you go to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park is beautiful. Also be sure to ride through the towns of Northeast and Southeast Harbor. Less crowded than Bar Harbor and quite quaint in spots. Another neat place to end up is Campobello Island. It's right over the border into Canada. Franklin Roosevelt used to vacation there. We made it a day trip from Bar Harbor. The ride there was not that great, but the Island was a pretty site.
Here's a link to it: http://www.campobello.com/
Edit: If you have time to kill while driving and want to stop in Mass, we'd be happy to meet up with you for dinner, and of course some

Matt,
Take the trip!
I did it in 2003, took the long way through the Adirondacks in NY, crisscrossed VT and NH and NE Maine. Drove up Mt Washington, across Rt 100 VT and the Kancamagus highway NH.
Then spent a week in Bar Harbor hiking in Acadia NP mostly, also did some hiking in Baxter state park .
Here are some pics

Who knows, maybe we can turn this into a Vintage meet. I would love to do this trip, but I don't know if my schedule will permit it. Anyone else want to horn in on Matt and Barbara's vacation?
Lets see, we've got Spring Fling and Fall Colors.... How about the Summer Wind??? Or the Vintage Sea Cruise???
