Default Miscellaneous Musings from China

--It's okay to back your car up on the Interstate if you've missed your turnoff.

--Shark fin soup is good. Lobster blood is clear.

--It's etiquette when having dinner to toast someone at the table when drinking
--It's also good to give a little burp at the end of the meal, and to spend some quality time with your toothpick.

--I asked my business associate if one could own a house in China. "Of course." Can you own the land under it? "No." Apparently you can buy your house for 70 years. And what happens when 70 years is up? "I don't know. Nobody knows..."

--The world's oldest profession is "on the menu" at most Karaoke bars.

--A neat bonus of smog--you can look directly at the sun without squinting.

--An 18 wheeler, a scooter with four kids, a dump truck, a car and bicycle carrying scrap metal can all share the same lane of a road.

--It would take the entire OSHA administration ten years to clean up one block in China.

--The building going on here is INCREDIBLE. Unimaginable really.

more to come...

Interesting.

Especially your comment about the building. We had heard there was lots going on over there.

When I was buying steel for the company I work for, the pricing was through the roof, and the availability on some of the larger items was not as good as it used to be. The explanation: China.

Gas is about 70 cents per liter here.

My hotel---

--Didn't get the memo that a big "Merry Christmas" sign in the foyer is un "PC"
--has over 1,000 employees, and less than 1,000 rooms
--my particular room as floor to ceiling limestone in the bathroom, a walk-in shower with full-length glass door, AND a separate steam room (!)
--I got an 80 minute foor massage after dinner (plus back, legs, head, arms, but mainly foot) for the princely sum of $6
--The restaurant here serves many different types of fish--for breakfast
--The bar couldn't make a vodka tonic if their life depended on it.
--You would think that all foreigners at the hotel are "pets" of the local Chinese, as they dutifully follow their Chinese business partners around during all daytime hours

--mud huts with no running water or electricity can be within sight of high rise buildings.

--Free range hens and ducks everywhere are a little nerve-wracking, given the latest news...

Tell us where (what city) you are in. I hope you are not in Harbin with no drinking water.

The company I work for is doing a lot of work in China right now. Sinopec has purchased a process that we supply equipment for. I may have to go to China for equipment startup (I hope not).
