Driving Shoes - Who has 'em?
I bought some Minnetonka Driving Mocs about 6-8 years ago. We were on a driving trip through the southwest. I really liked them and have used them to the point where they are now dead. I mean the skin was always dead, so to speak, but now even the little rubber nubs are gone and sometimes I can see my big toenail.
Deb bought me a pair of Piloti Mulhullands (sp?). Best thing about them is the sole thickness or lack thereof. I can really feel the pedals with these things. The ankles are cut low and the heels have a nice rocked profile. They also have extra leather on the wear points as well as heel/toe stuff.
Any other closet driving shoe owners out there or is it a California thing?

I bought some a year or so ago. I think they help out on the track. I don't wear them otherwise.

There are driving shoes, ala those moccasins, and then there are real driving shoes, the fireproof kind, which don't come in sensible colors and often have advertising on them. I've tried the former but found changing in the car (or sitting with my feet out the door) to be just too much of a hassle. They are comfortable, though, and give a good pedal feel. I don't heel-toe, so I don't know how they'd do with that.
Gloves, on the other hand (so to speak), are another matter altogether. I've used them for anything but 5-min trips for years and go through a pair every several months. I'm now using string-back ones (probably the same ones that Val mentioned) and can say those are the best ever. I have a couple of spare pairs, in fact, that I stocked up on. But it looks as if that International Auto Sport catalog is carrying them regularly now.
And, just for the S, I have a very cool (mesh, and appearance-wise, too) Honda cap, from a JDM importer. Color matches the car and everything. HPH

about the gloves. I use them in the summer a great deal as well. In the winter I frequently use regular kid skin gloves and have a pair in red and a pair in black depending on what outfit I'm wearing that day. In the summer I enjoy my stringbacks. Mine are getting a little on the worn side, so I may need to think about getting a new pair of them as well. I find when I forget to put on my gloves, the steering wheel feels slick. I got my stringbacks through a Miata parts dealer. I got hooked on driving gloves back when I had my MG in the 70s.

I tried the Piloti's but due to some arthritus in my toes I discovered within a couple hours at the track that I could not wear them after my feet got warm and swelled up. The seller was at the track; they were nice and took them back. I have also tried the indoor soccer shoes. In the end, my everyday New Balance tenny's work as well as as anything. Maybe I will try a pair of the Mocs.

- I do...several pairs.
