Sadly, I remember seeing him for the last time on the Tonight Show with Johnny. He apparently SO burn out on drugs, that he could barely hold a conversation. It was sad to see, as I was such a fan as a kid. That made it easier to not be so surprized when I learned of how his plane went down. An airplane is a lousy place to freebase cocaine. Although, the investigation was inconclusive, and a faulty cabin heater may have caused the fire and crash, investigators found lots of aerosol cans (commonly used to freebase) in the wreakage.

Either way, it was a shame to loose him.
