Since I have owned my 2002 Honda S2000 I have gone through at least a dozen different exhaust systems. Everything from Singles to duals to 2.5" up to 3". Nothing really has kept me interested long enough to keep it around. So after selling my last system I decided to just toy around with the stock AP1 exhaust. My plan was to convert the Dual into a single and bump up the piping size to 70mm.
So today I went forward with this project. Overall I am happy with the sound and look of it. I saved a little bit of weight and the butt dyno to me seems to have some extra pull mid range and up top. Its a straight pipe all the way through to the stock muffler. I'm running a test pipe as well so it flows straight through. I was concerned about raspiness but upon driving it on the street I noticed it just slightly at around 5000RPM or so. So, I got on it a few times on the freeway and I noticed no more rasp so I was stoked. Anyways, I payed $80 for everything and I am happy with it. Nice sounds down low and its not loud at all. (I have a K&N FIPK so I can 't hear much at VTEC anyways.) Anyways, I will try to get sound clips tomorrow.
Interesting! IN for sound clips, I would imagine it is still rather quiet with our stupid twin-loop muffler that is the size of a cadillac. Can you compare it to any exhaust systems that you have had in terms of sound?
I've been looking at doing this too, but have hesitated due to possible sound and output. I'm not expecting any gain in power, but I'm curious if cutting down the pipe to the single muffler inlet causes any loss in power.
I agree that $80 is damn good price for replacing the piping. Can anyone recommend a good shop to do this in Orange County, CA?
I'm guessing there's a small loss of power, not enough to feel but it'll show up on a dyno at higher revs. The OEM can was very specifically designed to quietly flow only half the engine output so it necks down pretty small inside the can and is a 3 chamber design.
I didn't notice any power loss at all on the butt dyno. It actually feels a bit perkier mid and up top. Again though I don't have a dyno to actually prove this.
