Thinking of getting Cams
Hey everyone I'm planing on going all-motor an was thinking of getting some aftermarket cams. I am leaning towards BC Stg. 2 N/A cams, mainly b/c I'm not stroked nor have High compression Pistons. I like BC b/c they seem to have a really good reputation an are affordable. An I would have to sell my first born to get Toda cams lol.
Anyway I could use some advice from you guys that know what you are doing if you don't mind.
Thanks
Kitt

If you want to spend a little money on something in the cam department get Toda cam gears.
Go to a dyno and do a baseline; then set
IN +5 / EX +1 and do a run;
IN +4 / EX 0 and do a run;
IN +3 / EX -1 and do a run
Compare the results, you will probably find +5 or +4 provides the most power. If +3 is providing the most power then try +2 /-2.
You won't have to install a new valve train or worry about tuning. Do you have tuning?

Cams are a very debated subject. I would really recommend you read up on the subject in the Camshaft "sticky" at the top of the forum. It has info for pretty much any cam set made for this engine. GL
, reputations of names are not as informative as real life testing from our people here on the forum, from actual owners who have installed these parts and can tell you the real reasons why something does or does not work. I'm just trying to help you realize that there is no such thing as a "good" set of cheap cams. So far with the cams nothing affordable is going to do you any good, put that money into 4.57 rearend or even 4.77.
The cam gear is the best way to go as LostMotion states.
Hopes this helps
I have probably done more testing of the cam gears than anyone that is willing to share their results. I have consistently seen gains of 3-5 ft-lbs of torque from a zero setting to the the final result. It comes from two distinct areas: 1) greater overlap of the intake and exhaust valve openings and 2) increased dynamic compression ratio from advancing the intake camshaft.
Now even with all my testing, it's still not enough to say a stock or near stock car will see the same gains, at this point it's a bit unknown. But my confidence in seeing a gain from gears is 10x my confidence of seeing a gain from cams on a stock or near stock car.
