Thumbs up How big are mid range gains with 4200 vtec change?

Just wondering how big the difference is? I have mine set at luke 5500 or so but see that with a tune people put it as low as 4200 or so. Does that actually start pullingbfrom that low? Or does it still not make good power untill 5-6k still?
Is a headed needed to adjust that low? If so what design headed is needed? Anyone have before and after dynos of stock vtec and 4200 or so without anything else really done at the same time?

this is a link to the Hondata Reflash thread. Granted this is a complete reflash and is recommended using an aftermarket header but the results will be similar in the mid range

You will want a header if you're going to adjust VTEC engagement point.

You're lucky I'm in a nice mood right now, but you really should do some searching. There's an official header thread in this forum as well.

Yeah I did some looking around. Only got my phone for internet right so takes for ever.
Seems weird the powerdoesbt change much with vtec being much lower. Do you still get the dip at the same spot or does that move down too?

Try to find a dyno graph of it. It completely changes the torque curve. Much more linear power band as well. While the "omg VTEC kicked in shock" is cool, a linear power band with a flatter torque band is much better.

Actually, here's the dyno:

Obviously the torque doesn't look super flat because of the scale and we still drive a Honda, but it picks up 20 ft-lbs in one spot and is much better than before. Just keep in mind these are on AP2s with Toda headers so your results will be different.

Yeah I already lost the "kick in" feel of vtec since I'm at 5500 now but would love more midrange to accompany my gears! Is a toda header the best for lower rpm range? Or just listed since it's done with the reflash or whatever? I'm assuming the ap1 will see smaller torque gains?

Yeah those are some real nice mid range gains!! Is that with adjusting timing? Or can it be made similar with a vafc?

It should be able to be made similar with a VAFC. There are no timing adjustments in that reflash. Just also read that it is with a test pipe and the Hondata IMG.

Ah ok cool. Those two will def add a chuck of that.
I gained 9whp peak already with my vafc so might not be lots more to get but I'm sure a little more mid range still.

Lowering VTEC to about 5500 shows big gains, but beyond that the gains are much much smaller. I have mine set at about 3500 and to about 5000 or 5500 the difference to non-vtec is small.
