Judge Judy....and YOU?
I was in a local County Courtroom this morning, as my attorney gave responses to Preliminary Objections from the "other side" on my lawsuit against my former employer. This was my first time in a courtroom in any offical role (other than an expert witness appearance many years ago) and it was very interesting. ]
Also the first time to see the assigned Judge in action; I must say that he was impressively fair and well aware of the issues in the case. He "cut through" a lot of obfuscation by the defendant's attorney, and the entire process was over in less than 30 minutes....also suprising.
Luckily, it seems that the rulings will largely go in my favor; should have the answer in a week or two. Then we'll see if the other side is more willing to negotiate a settlement
...saving everyone time and attorney fees.
I am curious to hear about the experiences of others with our seemingly mysterious justice system....full of strange jargon and Latin words .
** Hearing from past jurors would be especially interesting
** Hearing about procedural
and time factors might also be interesting.

been to court many times - needless to say it's NEVER fun
mostly the judge will just say
i find Mr. Bass guilty of the charges before me. Mr. Bass how much time do you need to pay $XXXX.xx? or he'll say i find Mr. Bass guilty of the charges before me. Bailiff please take mr. Bass into custody.

I was in court once, before I got my driver's license, for two bicycle riding tickets: going through a red light and riding on the wrong side of the street.
Also went once to juvenile court when my daughter was cited for truancy, although she had my permission to be home and I had called in her absence.

Been called for jury duty. Selected for a jury panel, dismissed for "cause." Cause they didn't like the looks of me.
Been in court as a witness for a work related law suit, as well as a couple trips to small claims court for work related dead beats.
It's not how I care to spend my time.

I'm semi-retired now though.
Some of all. Been sued by inmates and staff. Been a witness for and testified against. I've been picked for jury pool, three times, but have always been kicked off the jury. Most cases get settled or attorneys get them dismissed prior to court.
Got dismissed from two court martial juries for "cause"; I think it was for willing to be there, thin lips and steely eyes.
Went to court 2 1/2 years ago for a citation for not displaying a front license plate on the S. I had never ever had a traffic citation in Ohio before so I thought surely it would be dismissed. Judge asks me why I did it, and I tell him I was at a vintage car meet out of state, and it ruins the look of the car at these gatherings. Telling the truth is good, right? Judge says that is not a vintage car. I say no the drivers are vintage. Everybody in the courtroom proceeds to snicker or outright laugh - including the judge. Gavel goes down on a 94 dollar fine; that is 22 dollars more than if I had just sent it in by mail. I shouldn't have worn a suit and rather dressed like a poor pilgrim like all the other laughing defendents.
