Mother Nature is certainly messing up the airline routes to Europe! Seems this problem could last for days or even weeks. A farmer took this pic before abandoning his farm and 300 cows.
This is turning into a mess. I was supposed to be on a flight to Frankfurt, Germany right now, but it was cancelled. Now I won't be going. I was on my way to Austria for a 3-day meeting.
It was really frustrating the way United Airlines handled this. I booked my flight thrugh United, and the overseas segments were actually on Lufthansa. The United Airlines websites weren't giving out any updates or flight status changes. In fact, their flight status screens are still showing this segment (flight 8826) as being on time. I gave them my phone number in case of flight cancellations, and got no phone call.
I tried getting confirmation of cancellation yesterday (Saturday) through United, but they wouldn't let me cancel without a penalty. That means that I had to pack for the flight and be prepared to get to the airport in the unlikely event the overseas segments were cleared.
My first leg (Cincinnati to Dulles) wasn't cancelled. If I took that flight I wouldn't be reimbursed for the segments I took. If I didn't take that segment and my overseas segment ended up flying (delayed or otherwise), I would not have been reimbursed. My meeting was eventually cancelled and some unfortunate souls took flights before the skies became unfriendly (taking some vacation). Now they're stranded in Europe.
You would think the airlines would allow cancellations due to the circumstances.
I talked to my Dad earlier. He lives close to Dublin airport and said that although there are no commercial flights operating, the skies are full of light aircraft and helicopters.
One of my friends over there just posted on Facebook that he took his plane up earlier and ATC at Dublin airport allowed him to do a couple of touch-and-goes plus a low-level loop around Howth, which is unheard of under normal conditions.
