2016 Civic 2L Engine without wrist pin circlip

So, my new Civic, which I am otherwise enjoying, may not have wrist pin circlips installed. Oh boy.

Now, going back about 50 years, when I first started working on engines with my dad, one of the first things he drilled into me was, 'Check to make sure the f**king wrist pin circlips are installed and seated in the piston groove'. Wish he was still alive, so he could go to Honda and kick someone's arse with his biggest boots!

Yikes... I'm assuming you got the recall notice and your engine didn't blow up.

I actually just did my first one today.

Not all of them are missing the clips, just certain ones from a batch. The one I had today (managers demo) had all the clips, no issues to report.

In an environment that is so closely scrutinized and engineered, it baffles the mind how this could happen in the assembly process. Who do they have assembling these engines - Stevie Wonder ?

Because the guy in charge of making sure they're installed... It was his last day :roflmao:

Good to hear. How are you checking them?
I would use a borescope to see if there was any cylinder scoring, but how would you be sure the clips were in place without pulling the pistons? https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/public/st...lt/ponder2.gif

Drop the oil pan and use a borescope to look at the side of the pistons for the pins. It's not hard, it's just a pita and it doesn't pay enough...just like every other Honda engine related recall/bulletin.

Sorry to hear about you not getting paid enough.

Does the piston skirt come down the sleeve far enough to see the circlip? I'm having trouble visualizing how you can actually see the circlip.

Cheers, RB

That's a good question.

I guess Honda is like every other Manufacturer , they don't want to pay dealers much money, if any at all, for recall repairs. I think that is a bad deal for dealers, particularly when you get some models with hundreds of thousands of affected recalls. Imagine the size of the Takata recall, dealers are almost working as volunteers to save Honda billions.
