Is 6th Gear Really Needed ?

At what speed AND/OR rev's do you all reach for 6th ? Go from 5th to 6th..

Is it needed on our 400 highways ?? From my experience, people drive SO DAMN SLOW on our highways now, I'm struggling to stay in 5th... from 4th..

thank you

It's not a matter of "needing" 6th or when to shift into it. If you want 40 mpg like what I got going to Vancouver Island, you use it at highway speeds. On a long drive when you're mostly by yourself, why would you need to keep the revs up anyway?
BTW, this is the most fuel economical high performance car I've ever owned so fuel mileage is not a major issue with me but it's neat to know how well it can do.

Despite popular opinion not every drive we all take is a race...

I tend to use 6th if I'm cruising on the hwy, I usually lock it in at 120+ and just cruise. You get great mileage out of 6th gear on the hwy.

Just don't expect to jump into a race is all.

i think it's definately more a fuel saving technique...as the only time you would really need 6th is if you're trying to hit top speed.

I hardly use 5th gear. Usually 1st 2nd and 3rd are for acceleration, and then it usually goes straight to 6th for coasting. Of course, in Hawaii, we hardly have long straight roads to really use the higher gears.

Yep, I only hit 6th after 120 as well, or if I'm bored and feel like shifting gears.

It does help a little with the noise as well.

You'll definitely want to shift into 6th gear if are ever going to hit 155 mph!! :)

I'm glad we have 6th gear because for normal cruising on the
freeway 5th is to loooud engine screams .

6th is an overdrive gear. Top gear in a manual is usually overdrive, unless you have a 3 or 4 spd.

Peace.

Just curious, what does the S2K engine spin at when driving 100km/h in 5th and in 6th??
