Emergency Crews Respond To Fatal Crash At California Speedway Second Person Hospitalized After Crash POSTED: 3:23 pm PDT June 2, 2005 UPDATED: 5:16 pm PDT June 2, 2005 LOS ANGELES -- Two people were killed Thursday in a crash at California Speedway in Fontana. A private car club was renting the speedway at the time of the crash. A Porsche Carrera GT crashed into a retaining wall and came to rest on the track's infield. Authorities said two people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The second person in the car was transported by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. That person later died. The track is home to the California 500, Nextel Cup 500, the Toyota Indy 400 and other motorsport events. The 2-mile D-shaped oval surrounds an infield portion used for road courses and a 13-turn interior test circuit. Private parties can rent the track to turn laps. THE ORGANIZER HAD PICKED THE 150MPH ZONE AS THE ENTRANCE TO THE TRACK AND THE F-CAR DRIVER PULLED IN FRONT OF HIM NEAR THE END OF THE STRAGHT. THERE WERE NO CORNER WORKS AND NO FLAGS!!! HE TRIED TO AVOID HIM AND SPUN OUT AND HIT THE WALL AT NEARLY THAT SPEED. The passenger died instantly on impact. Ben was airlifted to the hospital, but still had a pulse when they took him so PLEASE PRAY FOR HIM AND HIS FAMILY. |
damn, it hurts to see that.

Very sad.
Ovals are https://www.s2ki.com/stor/forumshtml/emoticons/spam.gifing deathtraps IMO. I read on 6speedonline (the driver was a very active member there) that the entrance from the paddock was on the quickest part of the oval - a car entering the track caused the Pcar driver to take corrective action and caused the loss of control. |
As I said in the thread in R&C my prayers go out to the famlies and friends.
However, on the other side of the coin THE ORGANIZER HAD PICKED THE 150MPH ZONE AS THE ENTRANCE TO THE TRACK |
And if the entrance was to be at a fast part of the track, why weren't there any marshalls???? Anyway, I wasn't there so I probably shouldn't be so quick to judge...reading stuff like this scares me from participating in open lapping days. Yeah, I'm a wuss...I'll stick to driving schools at tracks for now.

It really opens your eyes when you see this stuff. Track events are VERY dangerous. Unfortunatly it takes events like this to make people realize it.
I had to see someone roll in front of me in on case and someone hit a wall just in front of me in another to give me that "real fear". |
