My Top Speed
All,
I decided to wind out each gear on the 401E. In sixth gear at 230kph I noticed that the car wasn't accelerating very quickly. I remember thinking to myself it would take a long time to get to top speed.
I'm wondering, is there something wrong? Some guys post top speeds of 250 and even 270kph!! I'm thinking, wow, how long a stretch of road do you need for that?
Anybody? How can I tell if my car is underperforming?

Hi,
Well first off the guy who did 270 had mods done to his car, so it had more power then the std.
also did you have the roof down? if so that's about as fast as you can get the car. There is just to much drag.
Short of that, maybe you we're going slightly up hill? I wouldn't think anything was wrong with your car. I've been over 250 and it does take a while to get there, even tire pressure can make a small difference.

I had the roof up. I guess it just means that it will take awhile to get up to 250. I just want to get up there and see what its like but it takes so long that I worry about catching up to the guy ahead of me (even when they seem so far away) that I chicken out around 235.
*Sigh* Maybe one day when there is no traffic and and a few straight kilometres available. Until then I care to much about living. This car might not be the fastest thing I can get but it sure scares the hell out of me sometimes.

rahul,
no doubt your speedo read 281 kmh, but that's 172 MILES PER HOUR - i don't think it's possible in this car - especially since it's highly drag restricted because of it being a convertible.
if the car were a true coupe, and your speedo was actual - you should be able to hit 190MPH - that's a bit far-fetched.
with a hardtop, i saw 270 something - but i wasn't kidding myself about it being the ACTUAL speed that i was travelling at.
i think the car is electronically limited to 155MPH - that's 252 KPH - it's not inconceivable that at those speeds the speedo would be off by 10-20 MPH (i.e. speedo reads 270 = 166 MPH or 280 = 172 MPH etc.).
btw, what's the ETA on the car?

I think the best idea is for those of us with GPS's to do a run.
I'll see what I can do tonight with the hardtop on, as long as I get the tires good and warm and I'll run it and see what the actual speed is.
Probably going to be better now than in the hotter weather.
