white03_s2k 09-15-2004 06:44 AM

I can get that wheel for 300 bucks.

PLYRS 3 09-15-2004 06:58 AM

:D

Triple-H 09-15-2004 07:13 AM

The only steering wheel change I would want to make in my S would be this one.

But then again, I would want all the other stuff that goes along witht he VGS feature in the Type V

doug, it's funny that no one - after 5 years - has figured out how to swap out the JDM shaft for the US/CN shaft.....

it's just the teeth/splines that are different.

wing 09-15-2004 07:20 AM

I thought I saw a US car with that wheel on it on here. Pretty sure....

I so 100% agree with ya Nimesh.

Why not call that hardtopguy up and ask him why the hell he's dragging his feet.

And ya know, even if you left out all the VGS mechanical and electrical features and just got down to the steering wheel, I suspect that flat bottom miht give some of the bigger S2000 owners just a tad more leg room, and that would be a good thing.

PLYRS 3 09-15-2004 07:39 AM

i did - not about the wheel specifially, but about swapping out the '04 rack to a pre-'04 rack.

physically, it can be done, but the TPS sensors are specific to each generation...b/c it's an electrical (not hydraulic) power steering system (signal comes from TPS), you will get some lag from the system and will alwys have a check engine light.

otherwise, i was gonna have them do it.....

wing 09-15-2004 07:43 AM

Does the '04 steering suck :D

compared to pre-'04?

yes....

Triple-H 09-15-2004 11:58 AM

Nimesh, really?
You can feel the steering is slower/requires more turning?
Wow!

You are not yanking my chain are ya? :p

PLYRS 3 09-15-2004 12:04 PM

doug, one unit of measure is a lot....especially when it's towards the lower spectrum of ratios.

it went from 13:1 to 14:1.

you wouldn't even notice it in most cars....but in the S2000, it's a lot.

QIKSILVR 09-15-2004 01:23 PM

Damn, I can't imagine how twitchy the pre 04 steering must be then.. I still find myself turning in too much sometimes and having to back off on the degree of input.

Triple-H 09-15-2004 01:28 PM

Very interesting Nimesh, thanks.

I'm driving the CRX-SiR today (S is in for a bunch of little stuff before my next driving school) and I was reminded just this morning about the S2000 steering. I can keep my hands at 10/9 and 2/3 and just turn to opposite lock and I can make it all the way up the parking ramp garage. In the CRX-SiR I have to shuffle my hands because if I don't the car will not make the corner. I can't imagine how cool the Type V would be out on the track!!!

At The Glen I'm finding I really don't like the electronic power steering going up The Esses. The determined "weight" in the wheel is way higher than I would like. In the CRX-SiR I can fly up there using just the lghtest touch of my finger tips on the wheel, this allows me to let the car find its own way. In the S I have to get more of a grip on the wheel because it takes more energy to turn the wheel and I can't feel it enough to let it find its own way. I know that may sound strandge going up hill flat out at 100+ mph, but believe me it feels so much better when the car sort of finds its own way without a lot of imput. All the other corners on the track don't bother me, but up through The Esses that electronic power steering sucks to me...

PLYRS 3 09-16-2004 04:30 AM

see, i don't find the S2000 steering feel to be heavy AT ALL.

there's no power steering fluid for the S, right?

at the track or highspeeds on the highway, the S just takes "the lightest touch of my finger tips" to steer.

of course i don't have any other car to compare it to - other than our other cars - but that's only a street comparison.

For the most part I agree, it is in just that one situation where it feels heavy to me. I was taught one of the fastest ways up the hill was to drive with your fingertips and not induce any extra scrubbing into the front tires, but the S just does not have that beautiful lightness the CRX-SiR's manual steering box has. In this case, older is better. :stick:

Yes, no fluids, just electronics.

PLYRS 3 09-16-2004 04:58 AM

maybe you got a lemon?

:stick:
