St. Michael's Hospital selects IBM to provide technology solutions
Focus on enhancing delivery of patient care and expanding research
Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital and IBM Canada Ltd. today announced the signing of a strategic agreement under which the world's largest technology company will help St. Michael's Hospital enhance patient care, hospital operations and work life for physicians and staff.
"This strategic relationship is all about applying information technology to improve the overall level of health care services," says IBM Canada President Ed Kilroy. "St. Michael's Hospital will benefit from this alliance as we improve efficiency, reduce costs and increase the time that health care professionals have to practice medicine."
St. Michael's will use IBM services and technology to enhance its clinical information systems and to take advantage of innovative technologies. IBM's Industry Solutions Lab, a world-class research facility in Hawthorne, New York, will work directly with St. Michael's Hospital to become a global healthcare Centre of Excellence. The hospital will also leverage IBM's Software Development Laboratory in Toronto when appropriate.
Jeff Lozon, President and CEO, St. Michael's Hospital, says by aligning itself with IBM, the hospital is in a better position to further enhance the delivery of patient care, research and education, and realize its vision of becoming internationally known as the finest academic health care provider in Canada.
"St. Michael's chose IBM to be a part of our global strategic alliance program because IBM understands the health care and information management needs of our hospital, and our commitment to use innovation to further enhance the delivery of quality, compassionate patient care."
The scope of the agreement includes computer hardware, a range of information technology services, messaging and other application-enabling software and technology research and development. IBM will provide on-site expertise at St. Michael's Hospital as required. IBM has also agreed to collaborate with St. Michael's Hospital to develop prototype solutions to address information management issues.
The agreement extends through the end of the year 2007. Financial terms were not disclosed.
