what oil grade are you using ?

As most of us here in Canada have to endure the AWFUL colder weather, I'm curious to know

1. what grade of oil (ie 5w40) you use in colder weather for your s2000 ?

2 .what grade/viscocity of oil you use in warmer weather for your s2000 ?

3. Are there any made specifically for the s2000 other than whats on the shelves at a Honda service depot ?

thx

The dealership put in Castrol 10W30 about 2 months ago. I wanted to go to synthetic but it is recommended not to until after the first 6K , which is about now for me. I top up now with the 10W30 and plan to switch to synthetic of the same grade in spring.

The seals don't set properly in the first 6k if you use synthetic oil. 10W30 seems to be a good grade if you don't take it out in the winter.

I thought all honda dealerships use Valvoline? I'm still using the regular 10W-30, thinking about switching to Mobil-1 very soon, maybe spring time.

Could be my error on the Castrol, will check tomorrow with my service rep. I top up now with the Mobil 1 synthetic and going with it in the spring as well. ON the US boards most of the S2000 owners preferred MObil1 synthetic, Castrol was second (based on some ongoing survey they do).

Will check tomorrow and let you know about Valvo and Castrol. Do you burn much oil? I drive quite aggressively and find myself topping up about 1/2 litre every 2 weeks or so.

When I change to synthetic at 12,000kms, I will go to 5W40 all year around. I use this also in my GTi VR6 and have no problems....You can buy 5W40 at Wal-Mart. Its Texaco Havoline Synthetic 5W40....I would rather stick with one grade of oil than switch every 6 months.

Peace

I burned a little oil during break in, but since 5000 km, nothing at all. I use 5-30 year round, ( garage over the winter ) and don't use Synthetic. Odd because I typically do in all cars, but its been reported that VTEC doesn't hit as hard with synth, so I counter act by changing oil every 2500-3000 km.
Friction is not really a large problem with this car, what with the reinforced cylindar walls and all.

yeah, i keep hearing about people having to top up - not sure why, but i've never had to.

formula honda does all my LOF's and i'm always inside reading the paper - i know it's castrol synthetic but not sure of weight.

Mobil-1 5W30 every 2000km (and OE Honda filter every 2K as well).

The Synth-VTEC softness is a MYTH. My VTEC kicks in HARD every time. :)

The only time VTEC won't kick in hard is when your oil is low, but there should be enough pressure at around 3500rpm to push the VTEC solenoid.

My GS-R (using a homegrown VTEC controller) bumped the VTEC solenoid at 3500 with no problem. (I know, that's too low for a stock mill, but I was just experimenting).

Anyways, after my exhaust is complete, my next project is a shift up - shift down indicator light:

GREEN-BL:GREEN:YELLOW1:YELLOW2:YELLOW3:RED:RED-BL

When ACCELERATING, will light as RPM increases:
GREEN: @1000rpm
YELLOW1: @4500rpm
YELLOW2: @5500rpm
YELLOW3: @6500rpm
RED: @7500rpm
RED-BL(inking @ 4 x per sec.): @8900rpm

When DECELERATING, lights will shut off as RPM decreases:
RED-BL(inking): @8900rpm
RED: @7500rpm
YELLOW3: @6500rpm
YELLOW2: @5500rpm
YELLOW1: @4500rpm
GREEN: @1000rpm

GREEN-BL(inking @ 2 x per sec.) will flash when safe to shift down 1 gear.

I was also thinking of having at least 1 additional light, BLUE for an option, i.e. to indicate whether the N2O solenoid is open or closed.

There is NO ETA for completion of this project yet. I'll have a better idea after I get the exhaust installed and the car dyno'd.

Peace.

i am using REDLINE 10w-30... REDLINE IMO is the best oil to use.
