Lots of people from Austin are either headed to the track or helping Randy with his engine swap this weekend. It could happen though... Have to see when Randy's swap is taking place first!

A broken con rod spelled the end of Randy's engine after many years of service. He's dropping a relatively fresh '02 replacement in the car this weekend. We'll be working on the swap all day Saturday in my garage.

It looks to me like the engine in these cars should be pretty straightforward to swap... At least it appears easier than the CRX's I'm used to doing swaps in.

He didn't have any forced induction on the car when it broke, did he? Do you think it was just a faulty rod (manufacturing defect), or did he overrev at some point? That's just somewhat scary for me because I regularly would bounce mine off the rev limiter in AutoCross.

There was no evidence of an overrev, no valvetrain damage until the broken rod slammed the #4 piston into the exhaust valves. The piston was damaged and there is evidence of scoring and likely some massive damage from the flailing rod. We'll know more one we pull the remaining block. The engine was an '00 model year with extensive track use and high speed running. It held up very well considering so much track time. The new motor arrived today and we plan to pick it up before tonight's karting event. We could use some help turning wrenches on Saturday. Randy has pulled an engine on an S2000 before but we could still use some help. The "tech day" will include a cook out.
