Default 2006 Mazda MX-5

I saw my first new MX-5, today. Looks pretty nice, but...

I know a lot of us are signed up for the Zoom-Zoom drive next month. A friend of mine ,who has a 2005 MazdaSpeed Miata and an RX-8, sat in one and wasn't very happy doing so. He said the seats are too narrow and the bolsters press against uncomfortably his legs. He thinks the seats were designed for a 145 lb Japanese driver not a 190 lb American. Also, the way the engine/transmission was moved rearward, it forces the passenger's legs over- basically a very uncomfortable cockpit. He also said the new folding top has eliminated space behind the seats that Miata owners used for storage on trips.

The thing I really liked about the NA and NB Miatas was the shelf behind the seats. It made the interior feel more open and gave the car a lot more room to put stuff. The new NC Miata is just like the S2000 with its integrated roll bars, which leaves no room for anything behind the seats. Both Honda and Mazda should have come up with better solutions for roll bars that still allow for storage back there.

It also looks like an early model Miata mated to an RX8. I don't like it at all.

The early cars looked too wimpy to me. I only liked the 99+ year models.

Although I haven't sat in it, I like the look of the new interior. The seats look comfortable. Just as the S2000 too the Miata as their target car and got made sure they did better in every aspect the Miata looks as if it took the S2000 and copied key elements.

A 2.3 engine swap is a no brainer and it comes from the factory turbocharged. So you should see some hot one on the streets in a short while

Roadsters are not made for Big people. There are other cars out there.

I agree with that statement. But I am by no means a big guy (5'11"), yet my seat in the S can't go any further back, and no, I don't drive in pimp mode. That interior is cozy for sure, but I love it.

Someone on this board a while back said you just learn to live with the small interior by learning not to carry a bunch of junk with you. My S has nothing stored inside except in the secret spot, where my truc k is junked out pretty bad.

I love the skinny seats...for those of us with fast metabolisms, it keeps us from flying around the cockpit.

I've got the Seatback pockets installed on both sides, they actually carry quite a bit of stuff. They're overpriced though. I think half the cost is paying for that S2000 logo.

From what I've seen in the commercials, I definitely agree. That was my first thought when I saw it... looks like they took those blocky fender flares off the RX-8 and tack-welded them to the Miata. They didn't seem to fit with the headlights, either... it seemed the headlights were countersunk into the front end.

I'll withold judgement till I see on in person, but I haven't liked what I've seen so far.

My first impressions from pics weren't all that positive but then again I have been surprised before when I finally got to see the real thing. In this case the pictures have been very "optiimistic" views.

You can clearly see the S2000 influence when you see the car but 99+ headlights and RX* fenders grafted onto a 91 Miata just don't cut it.

But HP potential is much greater than the old car, if the alum block holds up to high boost pressure.

Now about that 5 link rear end instead of the double wishbone . . . .
