Default Honda odometers wrong?

Anyone else see this?

Honda (HMC) is notifying 6 million owners of Hondas and Acuras that they are entitled to warranty extensions and, in some cases, payments because odometers in their vehicles rolled up miles too fast.

That made warranties expire too soon and hit some lease customers with excess-mileage penalties.

I received a statement in the mail for both my S and my wife's Acura. Basically all models in the 2000's (Don't remember the exact years, but 2002 and 2003 were included) have their waranties upped 5% on milage. No change on the time part. So if you had work done after warranty expires and within that 5%, you can get reimbursed.

I figured a car manufacturer would get caught doing this. Basically it reduces warranty repairs probably in the millions of dollars and also jacks people with leases as mentioned above.

It's a joke if an advanced car maker like Honda can't figure out to calibrate a fricking odometer. They've been around for well over a hundred years.

Honda has done this for years- tach and speedo included. I think the odo was an issue just because the odo keyed off of the speed input which is what they modified (i.e. it had the 5% in it, too).

If you do any tuning it rapidly becomes apparent that the tach lies by 5-7%.

Honda is not unique in this- a lot of manufacturers build a pad into the indicated speed for safety. I am not sure how many carry this into the odometer reading.

5%...

So that would be (1 * 5%) + 1 = 1.05

Math, it's a wonderful thing :-P

LOL - smart aleck! I didn't know the odometer was off by 5%. I did not understand what the 5% represented!

Just to point out, too, that I think people going after Honda are full of shit.

5% of 100k miles = 5000 miles

So they will extend warranties another 5000 miles? Whoopee. Hardly enough to get worked up about. I'd be more pissed that I could have gone 5% faster all that time, legally, and not risk getting a ticket for speeding.

It's not a big deal, Todd, unless your motor blows up at 36,500 miles when in reality, the motor only has 35,500 miles and the warranty is only good up to 36,000 miles.

Also, it's not always about extending your warranty... it's about exposing the truth.
