I lost everything on my phone
If you update via iTunes there is a backup made by default (at least on Mac OS, but I'm 90% sure on Windows as well).
Anyway, as with any update to software or hardware, you should always backup manually before proceeding! (Never rely on automated backups).
Additionally, I sync my contacts with Google for good measure

I sync my phone always and it did backup right before the process.
I think since I had to do recovery 3.0 installation twice, it wrote over the previous backup file and now I have a couple of backups of the phone but both have no pics, no songs and no contacts
I mean if the iTunes is doing incremental backup then it should not erase what is already there? Sounds like maybe some bug in the iTunes? LOL
Maybe it was not made to update an uinlocked/jailbroken phone using 3.0! LOL

unlocked could have caused the issue if you did it before ultrasnow came out. my jailbroken (not unlocked) phone was fine, but i did have to restore to 2.0, update to 3.0, then rejailbreak.
