Interesting things I found out

I just made a mad dash to L.A. and back to move my daughter.

I never knew the speed limit in West Texas was 80!

Also the Arizona cops have figured out ways to beat most radar detectors, fortunately I had a Valentine 1.

They run in packs and overwhelm the radar detectors that don't have a radar counter or arrows. My daughter's top of the line Escort was useless. Not only did it not pick up some of the signals till we were dangerously close, but also with the way the police used stealth you'd think you were past all the troubles and there in a dip up ahead would be another radar car.

The Highway Patrol has added a new weapon to their arsenal which was what I called snorkle or periscope SUVs. They'd hide an SUV in a dip in the road and raise a periscope up just over the top of the hill (20' or more) that contained either a Ka band radar, a laser or a camera using K band.

The Escort didn't pick up even one of the K band. K band is what the grocery store doors use.

They were also using very low power so that the spray didn't travel far.

I found out after I got back that Arizona also has a lot of stationary cameras mounted on the back side of bridges &/or poles which would explain the myriad of bogus K band hits I got.

FYI for those of you pulling trailers or other heavy items, the south route I 10 is a lot flatter and easier to tow on. I went out on I 10 with an empty trailer and back on 40 with a loaded trailer and the drive back was hell. The hills just killed my even speed and my gas mileage.

People told me that I 10 was a boring drive and 40 had more sights, but I didn't find that to be true. The terrain was so different than what we have around here that I found both to be equally interesting/boring. It's true 40 has more places to make side trips, but I've never made that trip when I've had time for side trips.

Also Google was way off on travel times for the north route. They didn't take into consideration the extra time it took to go north to 40 from L.A. nor the time to come south from Amarillo. They were spot on the rest of the way but said the trip north and south was hours less than it actually was.

Another interesting tidbit, there are fewer spanish language signs in El Paso than in Dallas or Fort Worth. You'd think there would be more.

v1 FTW, any pics of your trip?

Multiples, but mostly of my dog peeing at different rest stops. It was kind of a running joke.

I love my V1. It made the trip back through W Texas this summer that much more bearable. Too bad a 1st gen xB won't hold much over 100 very easily. Oh well.
