I sold an MS3 to typeSH. That car was a blast! great bottom end, and midrange. Yeah, power fell off in the upper RPM's but that was solved with upshifting. I knew someone was going to buy it so my impressions were limited. It might have an LSD, but torque steer is evident.
Performance wise, I have no doubts about it's capability and potential. Mazda knows how to make their cars zippy and engaging. It's something you can almost count on with their brand.

lots of comments on it having no power up high in the rev range. I'm sure MS3 owners gripe about the lack of torque in the S2000.
anyway, even Mazda doesn't recommend redlining at each shift. I think 6000 rpm shifts is what they recommend for the best acceleration.

also, if anyone came on the Boston Mtn Tour a month or two ago, there was a certain 12 mi stretch of road where a few of us were REALLY pushing it in the curves. If I remember correctly, an MS3 kept up with no problem.

Hey Adam - yep it was me. Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you before you left.
To the OP - if you do buy one of those horribly unreliable Mazdas, rest assured that - unlike Honda - Mazda offers free loaner or rental cars during the bumper-to-bumper warranty.
By comparison, when I dropped my CR-V off at the dealer to have the transfer case fixed at 24k miles I was rather suprised (and very disappointed) to learn that I was going to have to pick up the tab for a rental car while my own car was being repaired under warranty. WTF?

Actually, the engine has huge mid-range power (280 ft-lbs of torque), but it falls flat on it's face at high RPMs. The MS3 is definitely not like an S2000 or RX8 - revving the snot out of it doesn't really get you anything.
Also, the MS3 does come standard with a limited slip.

I didn't know Mazda did the loaner car program. I considered a 3 as a 2nd car or the gf wants a CX-9 or RX-8 and I'd probably take her 6, but I was wanting to get a brand that did loaners. Damn, adds a couple more cars back onto our list
