Default Prepping a wheel for paint

Without sand blasting, have any of u guys painted wheels that were previously painted? I'm JW if i should sand the heck out of these ap1 wheels then paint them, or just lightly sand them and paint them. I was going to get them all powder coated but i'd rather save 400 dollars. So any input you guys might have will be very usefull, Thank you much =)

what you need to do is sand them down as much as you can.. throw on a coat of primer, then paint them again

its a lot easier if you use some paint stripper / aircraft remover before sanding

ok thanks. have any of you guys done this process with the tires still on the wheels? or is it going to be better if i take off all the tires first. Because wut i was thinking is using tape to make sure the spray paint doesnt get on the tire. Also will the paint thinner weaken or discolor the tire?

I got my wheels poweder coated for like 180 i think for all 4

If you do it yourself, tires are fine i'd just either cover them with tape/newspaper or use vasoline on them and then just wipe it off when you're done painting, but be sure not to get vasoline everywhere

i'd sand it to the metal personally, but its up to you. i liked mine when i had them painted but if you let them get too dirty they won't clean up, powder coating them still lets them get dirty but they clean off a heck of a lot easier....

just my .02
