Default Top Up/Top Down

Why do I see so many S's with their top up? At what speed (freeway wise) do y'all roll with the top down??? I think if I had an S, my top would be down all the time.

Huh? I don't understand. Why would speed on a freeway affect whether we want top down? 0 mph or 140mph as long as it's not bad weather (actual rain), or above 95 or below 60. Or when I just get too damn dark.

top down rain or shine or cold or hot.

The only time it stays up is if I'm making a short 5 min hop, and the top was already up from being outside somewhere else. I never leave the top down while away from the car.

Gas mileage is considerably better top up. Car is considerably quieter top up.

The magic number is about 75 - 80.

That's the speed you should be traveling in moderately heavy rain to stay dry.

Of course, since we don't have speed limits like that around here, this was tested on a track somewhere...

On Edit: Oh, but I'm usually top down if it's sunny or just sprinkling unless I need to be on the phone or something when I hit the highway. Sometimes I feel like an idiot because I'll roll the windows about half way up to get better sound from the music w/o distortion at high speeds (lots of road noise)... man I need to quit being lazy and install that amp, heh.

I try to drive top-down always. I can't stand the poor rearward visibility with the top up. However, I'll put the top up in the following situations:
- Temps below 40. Above that, it's bearable/enjoyable with the windows up, heat cranked, and something to keep my head/ears warm.
- Rain. I've driven a few times with the top down in light rain. As long as you're on the freeway, it's usually fine, but doesn't work if you have to slow below 60ish.
- Very short trips. It's 2 blocks from my office to my gym. 9 times out of 10, I wouldn't put the top down for that trip.

Most of the people that frequently drive top-up probably aren't on this board. They're the same people that bought the S2000 because they thought it was "cute" or because they were having a mid-life crisis or because they think it's some sort of status symbol. Most people here are enthusiasts that bought the car to use it the way it was intended.

I think that also depends on your height. I was doing 65 in moderate rain and at 5'9" tall I was perfectly dry. However, my 6'4" cousin in the passenger seat was getting pelted in the forehead.

I do a mixture of up/down.

If I plan on driving and wanting to listen to music the top stays up or if I'm on my way to work so I don't smell.

Actually, I bought the car for the motor, chassis, suspension, and brakes. Top down potential is very down on the list. 99% of the time I drive to and from work with the top up. Only when I'm on surface streets off the highway do I drive with the top down, weather being nice.
