i went from stock 16s to stock 17s. the ride on an 01 car is MUCH harsher with the 17s and even more so compared with winter tyres on the 16s (squidgy tyres)

i think it brings the cars' looks up to date though

Just went back to 16" oems sprayed in black which look great. I had 18" wheels but tyres were a good £30 more per wheel due to being bigger. Acceleration is so much better on smaller wheels handling wise only notice it in the wet. Because it's a smaller wheel you MUST have good brand tyres. My car has VSA but even with it off handling in the day on 16" wheels is fine as long as you respect the car.

Driver skill and ability is often the biggest factor in crashing.

Did you have too big a profile tyre on your 18's? Acceleration should be exactly the same if you've kept the rolling radius the same.

As the vid ashdelsol7 posted says, the OEM 17's are lighter than the 16's when you include the weight of the tyre, so they're best (ignoring the special BBS JDM wheel option).

I don't think that's true

For example, using AD08 tyre weights, we have the following:

Tyre weights of AD08s from here http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/spec.asp...%20NEOVA%20AD08

Tyres
Fronts
16" 21lb
17" 22lb

Rears
16" 22.9lb
17" 25.5lb

Wheels
Front
16" Cast 17.5lb
16" BBS 13.3lb
17" '04 17.6lb

Rear
16" Cast 18.6lb
16" BBS 14.3lb
17" '04 20.5lb

Total
Front
16" Cast 38.5lb (17.5kg)
16" BBS 34.3lb (15.6kg)
17" '04 39.6lb (18.0kg)

Rear
16" Cast 41.5lb (18.8kg)
16" BBS 37.2lb (16.9kg)
17" '04 46.0lb (20.9kg)

For Toyo, the tyre weights are as follows (in kg):
16F: 10
16R: 10

17F: 9.6
17R: 10.6

17s slightly heavier all round again.

Not forgetting that rubber it relatively lighter than alloy.

Having the heavier bits in closer to the hub is better, the farther from the hub you have the weight the harder it is to accelerate.

A smaller wheel and taller tyre with the same overall weight as a bigger wheel with a lower profile tyre will have less rotational inertia and accelerate faster.

I switched from 16s to 17s because of the better choice of tyres with stiffer sidewalls (following the withdrawal from sale of the S02s) and had the geo done at the same time. I would never go back
