Default 2002 Honda S2000 Engine Rebuild

JPS Motor Sport, Milton Keynes - Honda S2000, 2002, 65,000 miles

Just to let you now that my Honda is finally ready for collection. It has been a long couple of months but fingers crossed the final result will be worth it!!!

Initially Leon (owner of JPS Motor Sport)thought that the Head needed replacing which was good because I thought it needed a lot more work, but from starting to take apart the engine there were a number of other issues which became apparent.

In May he came across an issue when he sent the head off to be checked and skimmed, head only needed 3 thou taken off which would not represent the issues I had with the car previously (multiple miss firing and over heating), he then checked the block face and found it was 6 thou out along with also noting number 4 cylinder had a build up of oil which could have been a sign of an oil ring fault or damage. Along with this number 2 and 3 cylinder bores were heavily glazed and number 1 and 4 cylinders still had cross hatchings meaning some work I had done on the engine previously really had not been executed properly!

In June he got the engine back from the engineers and he was about to hone bores ready for the rebuild but found number 3 cylinder (liner) was damaged, needing a new liner, which pushed things back an extra week due to the engineers being so busy. Later on that month he noticed the knock sensor was knackered and needed replacing, and as no aftermarket company stocked them let alone lists them online the only place to get one was from Honda.........had to be replace as engine would not run correctly without it.
now have issue with no spark, am going through all checks and all seems ok, question is, do you have a spare key as thinking it could be the immobilizer? Don’t want to be wasting time chasing my tail as to speak.

Finally at the start of this month the engine was rebuilt and back in the car but it wouldn't start, no spark. He played around with the crank position sensor and eventually it fired up as the oil press switch needed replacing. Went to get an MOT but it failed as the Restraint system warning light was on indicating a fault and the nearside upper ball joint was excessively deteriorated so these needed replacing.

After all that the car eventually passed the MOT and is ready for collection so fingers crossed all is well!!! So far it was a good shout with the recommendation and hopefully will get some sort of warranty from him too!

Some odd comments here , was it a standard block , how do you put a new liner in a standard block unless it has been worked on and say new Darton liners fitted , the OEM are FRM liners cast in and are not replaceable as far as I am aware , Darton or other makes need to have the bores totally bored or totally removed .

What a hippo said. Also. The knock sensor is normally the first thing Togo. Even when just doing the clutch as removal of the starter motor breaks it due to it being extremely frail. Do they do a lot of S2000s?

I can rebuild an F20c with all bits there in a day. If head and block need work it would take maximum 3-4 weeks. Seems a bit long. I should bloody hope he gives you a warranty.

It is a standard block as far as I am aware, and I am not mechanical at all so please forgive me. The reason it took so long was because he had a number of other jobs on and I know the engineer was pretty snowed under so the time just dragged.

When I picked up the car he has given me warranty on the work he has done........and good job too as I started the car this evening (I hadn't driven it since it has been back as I am still waiting for the V5C from the DVLA) and within a few minutes the engine light was back on, flashing. The revs dropped below 1000 RPM and the car was shaking, exhaust miss firing. The car almost cut out when I revved the engine. Let it run until the temp was normal but still had the same issues.

Email JPS Motorsport just now and see what he will do about it.

Unfortunately there are enough threads on here to suggest a rebuild will never be the same/as reliable as out the factory. It's a tolerance game but if it's the path you've chosen instead of a spare engine from a breaker, roll with it and hope for no headaches. Good luck.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. Am totally new to all this and yes sk4tony it is a route I have taken and fingers crossed it will work out. Money wasted I hope not!

Before the rebuild I had issues with miss firing on various cylinders (according to the diagnostics checks) and was always told the coil packs needed replacing. I did this with genuine used ones which didn't work. I got some new after market ones which are in there now but am still finding the same issues again.

The parts I have replaced so far are as follows:

Radiator Sept 2013
Clutch April 2013
Oil Seals April 2014
Water Pump April 2014
Coil Packs Aug 2014
Spark Plugs Aug 2014
Injector O Rings Jan 2015
Piston Rings June 2015
Cylinder 3 Liner June 2015
Block face skimmed (7 thou) June 2015
Cylinder Head Skimmed (2 thou) June 2015
Gasket Set June 2015
Oil Pressure Switch June 2015
Spark Plugs June 2015
Knock Sensor July 2015
Flywheel Bolts July 2015
New Engine Oil July 2015
Oil Filter July 2015
Drop Link July 2015

During Aug 2014 till now the car was hardly ever used

Without being negative alot of the repairs you state dont sit right with me.

Replaced liner???? You have paid 1000s to have that car sorted and im not convinced it will ever run right or last the test of time.

It needs to have a fault code reader plugged into it and then work from there. If you can rule out all mechanical issues which based on your rebuild list i would say you cant then i would be tempted to get the injectors tested to ensure they are all working.

I would be tempted to get a local member who has abit of mechanical knowledge to give it a once over. OBD2 fault code readers can be had for cheap on ebay and it will pay for itself in the future.
