Default 2009 Car - AP1?

Hello,

I'm hoping to find myself my first S2000.
I've been to look at one today which is a 2009 car, however the VIN plate clearly says AP1 and the redline is also 9000 rpm. I understood that the redline was lowered on all cars post 2004.
Have I misunderstood something or is this car not quite right? I'm in the UK if that makes a difference.

Cheers
Phil

Yes sorry, totally misunderstood. All cars sold in the UK are AP1, AP2 refers to the 2.2L engine version sold in the USA and Japan. In the UK we have the facelift version. Redline is 9000 rpm on the 2.0L engine that we continued with over here.

See here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S2000

This explains the differences. Thank you for asking, so many people (wrongly) call the European AP1 facelift, AP2, we never had it so anyone referring to an S2000 as AP2 in the UK is one thing...... WRONG!

A beginners mistake it would seem then, thanks.

I blame all of the American You Tube videos I've been watching as part of my research.

Don't worry Phil, it's very common, even Honda dealers in the UK sometimes make the same mistake. Please any questions you have don't hesitate to post up. Good luck with your hunt!

I blame all the ignorant people who think they know about S2000s (mainly on facebook) talking about AP2s when they are AP1s

Yep, AP2 is the VIN designation for the 2.2 engine.

Hands up anyone who has a genuine AP2 (2.2L) in the UK?
Out of curiosity.

From the US reviews I've seen most people seem to rate the AP1 much more highly.

For what you lose (1k rpm) to what you gain (limited additional torque) it seemed like a pointless exercise.
