Gearbox Spring/PLate for Reverse

Gearbox Spring/PLate for Reverse
Basically that up/down motion on the gearknob has gotten progressively stickier , now to the point where I have to give it a decent push/pull and if not paying attention and it stays down I could quite easily hit reverse (or try to) when going for 6th.
Took the cover , plate and moved around the boot as I could to try and get some grease down but no joy.
Did a search which seemed to suggest a faulty spring, can it be accessed from below and would it be a straightforward job as I live in the boonies and local mechanics would never see these....

did you remove the gear stick also ?
easy job and try greasing in there making sure not to put back 180deg out

Yup there is a DIY somewhere on here, shifter is only 3/4 bolts iirc but you might need to replace the plastic cover that slides in locking the gearshift in place. Somehow that was "stuck" on one of mine before and wouldn't go back in without a lot of force, might as well replace the plastic bit that goes on the ball if you're doing that too and get some new grease for her.
Edit: Here it is
