Air filter type choices

Before you roll your eyes, this is not another "which intake" thread.

I'm putting together an intake that is a bit of a copy of an AEM and ends up sat in the front bumper area, ala AEM. Pic below:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.ph...mg=219499&md=1

Now, which air filter design do I go for?

I'm torn between this one, the RU-2430 which doesn't have an open end:

http://www.tdotperformance.ca/media/...k_nru-2430.jpg

Or the RX-4990, which has an open end:

http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/pr...x?prod=RX-4990

Now - my thought process is, as the top of the air filter will be facing forwards - having the RU-2430 with the flat top means the air can only go in the sides, whereas the RX-4990 has an open top, meaning more air can get in? Or does the air get in from below it enough that you don't need the top bit to be open?

There's £20 more for the RX-4990 so don't want to spend the extra unless it will make a difference. Will probably cut open one of the air dams in the front bumper (04 model) to let more air in.

Also, lagging the pipework (I know it probably makes no difference but I've got the heatwrap already)

Opinions please, thanks!

I doubt you'll get much ram air effect, so I'd get the cheaper one. You are also extremely unlikely to achieve gains anyway...or ones that you will notice...

I know all about air filters and the lack of gains they provide ;)

Thanks.

Get a velocity stack and an AEM dryflow filter.

For the maximum benefit, the air filter needs to be in a plenum of low velocity high pressure air. At that point, a mushroom type filter on a velocity stack is your best option.

In order to make the plenum, you will need to box in the area around the filter. If you then have another trumpet type arrangement out of the front of the bodywork, you *might* gain some benefit at speed from the ram effect increasing pressure in your plenum...

Meanwhile, back in the real world, the best thing to do with that is to throw any old air filter onto it.

Precisely.

You won't find a much better designed filter than the one Honda supplied with the car the transition from filter to pipe connection is much better than the K&N filters. If you want the best filter set up for least outlay I would do the spoon mod to the inside of the oem box then fit a 3" pipe from underside of box to the area behind the drivers side false vent ( even better if you remove the vent blank and fit an air scoop), then blank off the old intake hole. You now have a force fed air box all correctly dimensioned for the engine, it won't look all bliged up but it works
If you still want to go ahead with your idea look at ITG at least they fit bel mouths to the filter back plates

Now that is a pretty good plan.

Or you can re-use the duct part of the stock intake and endup like my setup (idea found in this forum):

Weight saving, more engine bay space, nice sound and cold air... what's not to like? ;-)
Since the air is coming from the side I don't need an open front filter ;)
