Silly question .... but where is the heater matrix and where is it likely to leak ?

The only smell (slight) of anti freeze in the car this morning is by the carpet near the front hand side of the drivers seat - which I thought was an odd place to smell it .....

I'm sure the neighbours think I've totally lost the plot sniffing all round the car inside and out

Not sure about the S, but the usual location is behind the middle of the dash

In other words about as inaccessible as you can get

Might be worth putting some plain paper in the footwells, and up the sides of the tunnel

Come the morning, you might have some evidence

The leak is very likley to run under the top edge of the carpet and sound deadening. It may not appear for a very long time, if at all.
Yank the carpets up and have a rummage behind the radio with the heater knob set to hot, vents to floor and no fan whilst running a hot engine.....

John,

The heater matrix is in the white plastic box above the passenger's feet.

Where the heater pipes go through the bulkhead.

Nick, thanks for the location of the matrix .....

The garage looked at it yesterday and could find nothing wrong despite three different people taking it out and putting it under a pressure test

They could offer no explanation to the smell .... lets hope I am just going mad ! The smell is still there but to a much lesser extent. I wonder if I could have driven through something which is permeating up into the car ? All very odd ....

I will keep my eyes on the coolant levels for sure though.
