If the battery is/was dead, then its the immobiliser doing its job I expect. It sounds similar to the difficulties I had.

Get the car hooked up to the other car using jump leads, that should provide enough electricity to reset the immobiliser. Lock, then unlock the car using the keyfob, insert key and try to start.

And if for some reason you do need a fuel pump, be warned that a Walbro 255 is quite loud.
