All that's happened is that someone has fitted some aftermarket speakers.
Wires run from the head unit to te cross over where the signal is split into high frequencies for the tweeters (which are still in situ), and low frequencies for the woofers which are knackered.
If you buy a replacement set of speakers, they will come with crossovers, so you can rip everything out, including the tweeters and crossovers and simply replace.
While you are at it, add some sound deadening to the doors - it'll make a big improvement to the sound.

Best place to fit Crossovers is inside the inner door card, cut them into the polystyrene foam insert that fits into the door then they don't get ruined by water - only a clown would fit them there in the actual door.
