My 02 had the CD changer mounted in the cage (sorry, no pics of it) and, as you say, it took up a huge amount of space. It was bolted to the floor on the left hand side of the boot.
With the 04, I didn't bother with the cage - my multichanger now lives in the central part of the plastic thingy inside the hollow bottom of the boot, with the cable fed through the bulkhead and along the transmission tunnel to the HU. Much better solution in terms of room and no problems with jumping either.
