Brake/caliper help
Hi.
I had some news brakes pads and discs put on a few weeks ago. The other day I noticed a burning smell and creaking noise from the rear, plus a bit of smoke coming from the brakes. I took it into the garage this morning and they said it's going to need a new caliper, because it's sticking, and it's going to cost £350. He explained that they would have done something to the caliper as part of the process to put on the new brakes.
My question is this: Are they culpable for the caliper going wrong? If so, can I challenge them over the cost of the bill for the new caliper? Or is it just one of those things that I'm going to have to accept?
Thanks in anticipation.

Are they the rear brakes?
If yes then there is a pin on the back of the rearmost pad that has to be located in one of the slots on the caliper piston face. If this is not done then the pad face will not be presented to the disc squarely and could cause the piston to jam.
If the garage has not done this then they could be at fault and liable for the damage.
Did you use a Honda Dealership to do the work? If yes they should have known this.

Yes, they are rear brakes. And the work was done by a Honda dealership. Thing is, if I mention this to them, they will surely deny it, won't they.

Yes, they probably will. Sadly like all customers, you are in a no win situation. Just take it to another stealership to get the work done, that way you will have the satisfaction of knowing that they have not profiteered from thier own incompetence.
