Buying a Jap import AP1
Hey guys,
I have some questions about early (1999-2000) japanese s2000 models.
What fuel are you using in them and has anyone had any detonation problems?
Do the have OBD1 or OBD2?
Would it be possible to read the knock sensor output live on a laptop/obd2 reader?

I bought a 1999 JDM 7.5yrs ago.
I used shell V-power in it and never suffered from detonation. I did 75k miles hardcore thrashing on that engine without problem.
Not sure about obd stuff sorry.

I bought one couple years back, no detonation problems and I have used 95 RON from BP. Stick to Momentum or v-power though... it has obd2 port and I don't think you can read the knock sensor IIRC but could be wrong...

I have a MY99 JDM.
Like Nick says, it has an OBD2 port, but isn't actually OBD2. However, expect all diagnostics to be found as per OBD2.
Never had any detonation problems, but then I only used super unleaded.
TBH, the car runs rich anyway, so I don't think you'll have a problem even with normal fuel. Personally, I liked the good stuff, so that is what went in!

unleaded can be used (ie: engine runs) in extreme need.
SUL is recommended and prefered though.
the power loss with the JDM on '95 is very noticable.
i use sainsburys SUL.
odb socket works with odb2 software. im fine with an ELM 327 bluetooth dongle.
