Car Alarm installation

Wonder if anyone can give me some advice on the standard alarm system, had some major problems a few weeks ago and ended up disconnecting the alarm from the boot as it kept going off after replacing the battery, as i understand there is a battery on alarm power sounder which I'm assuming ran out of battery hence it kept going off.

Anyway ive since bought a new one off ebay

I've connected it and its not made a sound and im struggling to try set it off just to see if it works, is there a special procedure i need to follow to link it up to the car? Have it bought a brick? These are questions im asking myself and im hoping i can find some help on here as obviously id like a working alarm on my car
