Default Castle Combe

Heading to Combe in the not to distant, so been watching a few vids to get a bit of familiarity. Just a question for anyone who's put in laps there, are the chicanes typically/best taken in 2nd or 3rd?

Ive seen both in various vids. 3rd looks to be the smoother, quicker option?

I've not driven CC, but my general experience is that, for those of us who are not driving gods, the higher gear is usually smoother and faster.
It's too easy to bleed off too much speed when going down to a lower gear, and the extra shifts cost you time as well.
The extra noise caused by a lower gear often means that it feels faster, but the speedo doesn't lie.

A useful rule of thumb is "only use second if your minimum speed is 45mph or lower". (Note that this number can be raised depending on the length of the straight afterwards - keep an eye on your max speed on the following straights to see which works best through the chicane.

I find the best way is just to go and not think i must be in this gear doing this speed... Do what feels safe for you and then build from that.

I think that would generally be my default position too, but as you say - sometimes hard not to be seduced into thinking you're really pressing on with that lower gear

Kind offer - thanks mate! There's a slim chance that'll be the day I'm there (yet to book - waiting on the other choppers I'll be going with..) but otherwise Its a bit too far away to casually pop by.

All depends on your car / experience.

Combe needs a lot of respect as a beginner.

Just don't try and take Avon rise flat and brake after it just yet

Went round it last year in the rain ( very wet ) i did not like it, not sure if it was tyres or suspension set up but every time going round the last corner where the white lines for the starting grid are made it oversteer every time

i hope to do it in the dry this year and hope the weather is good for you when you go
