thanks for the heads up, just ordered 6L for my next service in April - I feel an enormous sense of self righteousness planning so far in advance!

I've just had major service done and they've put in 10w60. Is that wrong then?

Your owner's manual says 10w30 or 5w40. Most people go for 10w40 or 5w40.

Is oil normally marked with a use by date. I've just looked a one of the 12 ltrs which arrived today and it has 16.02.11 stamped on the neck but no indication what the date represents if it is even a date. This would make it 3 years out of date or am I just being paranoid.

Wouldn't worry about the date,,,, its been in the ground for how long ??

As long as the bottles etc are sealed it will be fine... oil does take on water, hygroscopic, but nothing like brake fluid.

Oils like Edge are are less of a problem for water intake...don't ask me why ! although I think the likes of BMW and VAG longlife stuff has something to do with it.....apparently they just don't absorb water the same as "cheaper"oils.

Bound to be a chemist on here soon !

As long as cannister sealed wouldn't worry about it. Minimal moisture in the top of the can.

More moisture in the engine from short journeys and lack of oil changes will cause more of a problem than an open can of oil.

Leaving a car unused for a long time is more likely to show up moisture in the engine but a good long blast to get it really hot will drive it off.

Leaving oil in a car too long, between changes, is more likely to be a problem from acids rather than water.

Would 6L be enough for a complete oil change?

Never done it myself before - want to have a go

Sorry, I'm a new S owner. Is Castrol Edge the recommended Oil on here? On other forums I've been on most people tend to state that Castrol stuff is normally overpriced and better quality oils are available else where?

Edit: Oops, should I delete this question after reading the top again?
