Default Clumsy Sod

Long story but I needed to remove the rear light clusters. There are 3 cables and 4 bolts on MY99. It was freezing and the bolts were tight. You guessed it, snapped 3 of the 4 bolts, so now the cluster is being held on (badly) by the remaing bolt.

Phoned Honda (maybe not the ideal place), and they said "new light cluster". The bolts seem to be held in place in the cluster by plastic/rubber grommet. Apparently I can't just use the grommet.

Does anyone know what i'm talking about, and has anyone done the same/know of a cheap fix. Or am I looking at a new (second hand) cluster?

Cheers
Mr Clumsy

From what I remember there are 4 plastic threaded posts on the back of the cluster which go through the holes in the rear panel and are secured by nuts on the inside. Chances are you've snapped the posts of the back of the cluster. Araldite may be your friend here, suppose it depends where they have snapped. Another option would be to glue some bolts to the back of the cluster and drill new holes in the back panel and secure it that way.

I wouldn't think you would have to resort to a new cluster...

New bolts should work, and a healthy helping of no-more-nails? Or is there something that'd work better?

My posts are long bolts with a nut that fastens on the inside. They've snapped halfway - just where they started to poke into the boot.

If they've snapped halfway then I would cut them off altogether and replace with some new (stronger) bolts. I wouldn't use no more nails, some form of epoxy resin or even a hot glue gun to attach the new bolts to the back of the cluster...

If you can't bolt these in securely your car will leak like a sieve.
2nd hand light clusters can be had cheap enough on ebay - i doubt you'll find a glue that can hold strongly enough to allow you to bolt the lights in well enough to compress the foam enough to prevent water ingress.

I'll give the bolts a go on Friday, cheers Madfish.

And UF you're right - it leaks like a bloody sieve!
