Hi All

just got a new clutch kit to replace the one on my car. car just ticked over 80k

they are telling me that i may need a new flywheel too. is this really required or is it just best practice?

If your old clutch has been slipping then there may well be some wear on the face, this can often be skimmed off. If it is needed then it's a good excuse to go for an even lighter flywheel

I just changed my clutch and mine is 101k miles, no need to change flywheel as it's still in good condition

I also just ticked over 80k and recently changed the clutch. Didn't change (or even skim) the flywheel, looked in good shape and has been perfect since!

When I changed my clutch at 37K miles - that annoying buzz - the clutch material was fine and the flywheel had light scoring in it. I thought about leaving the flywheel as-is, but in the end spent the €50 and got it re-skimmed for peace of mind. As stripping the transmission out was such a pain in the a**, I didn't fancy doing it again to deal with shudder, etc, later.

Picture is below. You can see the scoring that was on the flywheel face:

Had mine changed on the old car at around 90k miles, didn't need to have the flywheel changed

Remove clutch and check for wear
ps my fly was fine also at 103k no slippage before replacement, > this may damage a flywheel.

You would have to give it some abuse to ruin the flywheel, A clutch is designed to wear out on the pressure plate side first so containing any damage to the renewed parts, that is unless someone has being driving around with a slipping clutch for months which seems to be getting more common these days
