Discs thickness. 1mm left. Time to change?
Hi all
I am planning to change my brake pads shortly (as you might have guessed from a previous thread!)
I checked the thickness of my front discs with a micrometer, and I have 24.1mm left. Minimum is 23 I believe
Doesn't seem like a lot left but for all I know it might be 50% of the life left (I don't know how thick they are out of the box)
Is it time to change? I'd rather do pads + discs at the same time if I am close enough to the end of their life.
Could not check the rear discs as the rotor is not as easily accessible, but I assume they wear less than the front if anything?

Correct me if I am wrong but i thought the OEM front discs have 24mm as a dim cast in , so i would presume this is the min, but some one will have a service manual witht he minimums listed.
0.1 mm is not a lot i would have thought , how many miles and sets of pads have these discs done !

Contact Marcus at disc skimmers and ask him about it. He has done all sorts of work with brake discs etc. may save you a few quid. He skimmed my old OEM discs and was the biggest improvement I got to my braking, I changed both pads and lines.
Or if your wanting new discs anyway I'm more than happy with my mtec discs front and back. Quit reasonably priced and if you get the black coated ones the hub and edges stay coated so you don't have to worry about the rusting.

So with 24.1 in my front disc I am at about 50% through its life (out of the box, 1.9mm to 2.1mm to be "worn", I have 1,1mm left to be worn)
Does this make sense?
My car has 66k on the clock for info - and looking at the history I am guessing 2 sets of pads

I don't know what the minimum service thicknesses for our discs are, but I did come across this document from Honda doing a google search.
http://downloads.hondatech.info/Auto...n/x00-088e.pdf
I read it as saying that Honda will refinish a disc if its thickness exceeds the refinishing limit (before refinishing) ie if an S2000 disc measured 23.1 mm before refinishing then they would refinish and send you on your way - I wonder how much thickness comes off with the refinishing process?
It seems you have plenty of disc life left from a thickness point of view.
